Pratapgad Fort

History & Trek Guide

A Journey into Maratha History

Pratapgad Fort stands as a monumental testament to the valor and strategic brilliance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Built in 1656 by Moropant Trimbak Pingle under Shivaji Maharaj's guidance, this hill fortress is situated 22 km west of Mahabaleshwar, standing proud at an elevation of over 1,000 meters above sea level.

The fort is famous across Indian history as the site of the legendary Battle of Pratapgad between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, commander of the Bijapur Sultanate. Today, visitors can explore the upper and lower forts, the sacred Bhavani Temple, the tomb of Afzal Khan, and enjoy panoramic 360-degree views of the lush Konkan valleys.
